Why Predators and Psychopaths Are Drawn to Religious Leadership

Check out this article about why narcissists, sociopaths (synonym for psychopath) and predators are drawn to careers in religious leadership.

I read this thinking of Kip McKean (and Victor Gonzalez, Sr) and found them to meet basically every characteristic.

Psychology Today: Why Predators Are Attracted to Careers in the Clergy

  1. Even Satan pretends to be an angel of light, many see preaching as a way to get rich ( 1 Timothy 6v5 )

    1. The Bible very clearly condemns those who see preaching as a way to get rich. And Kip has clearly used his position in the church as a way to get rich. The leaders he appoints also follow his example in this.

    2. Sadly, that is standard operating procedure for Kip's ministries. So much so, that TK apparently forgot how bad it sounds to say it "out loud."

    3. "People who are selfish can be discipled by someone else, unless they bring something BIG to the table, and I'm not afraid to say money could be one of those things..." Tim Kernan-ICC World Sector Leader

This explains why the red carpet is always laid out for pseudo-celebrities like J.R.P. of the CAICC. When J.R.P. decides he's had enough of the world, wants to repent and get restored he just throws down cash and he's in like flynn. While regular rank and file members have to jump through hoops to get back in the good graces of the church. Can't help but see the similarities shared by Kip McKean, his WSL(s), and the Pharisees whom Jesus rebuked in Matthew 15-

Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a] and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b] But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
      They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’[c]”

Sadly for J.R.P. the only reason why ICC Evangelists "disciple" him is because he's a cash cow for the church. Otherwise according to Tim Kernan, people like J.R.P. would be "discipled by someone who is 10 miles away from leadership..." http://torontodisciples.org/sermons/

    4. Poor JRP. He escaped? Only to be drawn back in to the cult? Parents take note - even highly intelligent people with everything going in their favor can be sucked into cults. (JRP is somewhat of a celebrity, is incredibly talented and accomplished, and independently wealthy.) He is a great "catch" for Kip not only because of his wealth, but also because of his fame and "coolness." He is someone who can help bring greater numbers of additional money-contributing members into the fold, meaning more money to "advance God's Kingdom," aka, more money for ministry salary and benefits.

  2. Funny that you mention Kip's leaders as he has recently tapped several couples to be (drum roll please...) the new Sold Out Movement's World Sector Leaders otherwise known as SODM WSLS! Let's take a look at a couple of these "qualified" appointees:

"The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, be sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil." 1 Timothy 3:1-7

*Corey Blackwell-Baptized in 1990 and appointed an overseer (evangelist) in 1991. If that's not a recent convert, I don't know what is? Corey has also been married 3 times (yes, that's THREE times) as a disciple. An overseer should be the husband of one wife.

*Theresa Broom, Joan Bartholemew, and Patrique Smellie have all been placed on "church probation" for various reasons. All three women have the reputation of doing very little and requiring their underlings to carry out their ministry duties. While leading the West Region, Patrique required her leaders to text her (yep, text her) with the sins they struggled with that day. SMH!

*Andrew Smellie-At several speaking engagements, Andrew often preached that his own father was going to hell. At a GLC, Andrew's dad was actually in the audience when he shared this from the podium. Yep, it was awkward. Talk about a lack of self-control. Sadly, ICC members LOVE this kind of stuff up. Andrew is patted on the back for not being "sentimental" and "calling it like it is bro!"

    2. I nearly laughed myself out of my chair when I heard about who Kip picked as new WSLS (Ha! Ha! Love the acronym!). This goes to show that Kip doesn't select people out of their righteousness and obedience to the bible but rather for their allegiance and loyalty to him.

The next time World Sector Leaders, Kyle and Joan Bartholomew, are preaching/harping about "purity" in a dating relationship just ask them to share a little bit about what their purity was like when they were dating.

By the way...I was at that conference when Andrew Smellie said that about his father. It took all I had not to go up to Andrew's dad afterward and apologize for his son being such a prick.

    3. I know, weasels and sodomy (WSLs & SODM) are bizarre terms to correlate to the high and holy stuff of "God's Kingdom." I can't figure out why someone as bright and perceptive as Kip would create terms with such weird, negative baggage. As for the people you mention, they are but pawns in Kip's plans, and will eventually regret ever wasting good chunks of their lives working for Kip, being deceived and deceiving for a predatory narcissist/sociopath.

    4. During Kip's time in the ICOC, the WSLs were at the top of the pyramid scheme (ahem-discipling tree) and as such also at the top of the pay structure. Considering that Kip has basically replicated the ICOC in the ICC, guess we know several folks who'll be getting a nice pay raise.

ICC Members graaaab your begging buckets!!! Your WSL(s) are counting on you...

    5. To Anonymous July 3rd @ 1:30pm:

This is an interesting point. The ICC had their Special Missions Drive approximately a month ago. It would be interesting to know how much of the money raised was actually going to support new and/or existing churches and how much of it was used for administrative purposes such as a pay increase for those couples tapped to be so called "World Sector Leaders." Curious to know how the McKeans benefited from this Missions Drive. Were they also given a pay increase?

    6. "Were they [McKeans] also given pay increase?"

This is Kip's church. He gives it to himself. Just like he gave himself a 'bogus' doctorate.

    7. To previous 3 "Anonymous" posts: Yes, the church exists largely as a tax-preferred vehicle for enrichment of Kip and select, loyal friends of his. I'm sitting on a story about $3.1 million dollars that he had sent to an offshore account back in the "old" days, leading to one of his administrators leaving in disgust. And that was only one transfer of what we can conclude was a long string of similar transfers. And yes, the ICCM is just another vehicle to transfer more wealth from others to Kip and Co. Never mind the scripture that says that those who use godliness as a means for financial gain are clearly condemned.

  3. Let's also not forget that during Kip's ICOC reign, he would often preach that if a church leader cannot control his kids and/or kids are not disciples than that leader is not "fit to lead in the Kingdom of God!" Funny that when all three of Kip's kids didn't want to have anything to do with the church, Kip started to sing a different tune. He's definitely a piece of work!

    1. Right, Kip himself is not even qualified to be be an elder according to the Bible (or even his own previous teaching), so how would it make sense for him to be the leader of everything?

  4. The whole reasoning behind most things is that the blood of jesus will wash away all your sins. Yes of course it will. BUT if we deliberately keep on sinning than no sacrifice of sins is left on a fearful judgement. Without holiness no one will see the lord!

  5. Speaking of Kip and his leaders. Does anyone recall Elena McKean being personally fruitful-meeting, studying the bible, and baptizing someone she met; serving in children's ministry; or cleaning other church members' homes? How about standing on street corners with a big orange bucket pan handling for Special Missions? All of which regular rank and file members are required to do? Or does Kip feel that Elena is too good to serve in this capacity?

    1. I am not sure what Elena does, but I have never heard of her doing any of the things that you mention (and Kip neither, with very few exceptions.)

As for Elena, I think that just maybe she is just trapped with a man from whom she would love to escape.

    2. Recently learned that "tagging" is no longer just mandated for Special Missions but is now required all throughout the year to help ICC members raise the required fees and expenses associated with attending the numerous church functions (ie. workshops, retreats, conferences, etc) that Kip expects "every cotton-pickin' sold out disciple to be at!"

Pretty soon, ICC members with their green MERCY shirts and bright orange buckets begging for money at traffic lights and street corners are going to be just as common as the homeless folks with signs. Betcha' you'll NEVER see Kip and Elena doing this. If you do, please post picture!

    3. The ICC and its upper leadership are swimming in cash, and yet I'm reminded of the CCR lyrics: "And when you ask them, 'How much should we give?' Ooh, they only answer, 'More! more! more!'" My mind is blown at how much I wasted in donations to Kip and friends. I left the ICC shortly before "tagging" was started .. It is sad that charlatans can and do abuse people's noble motives in order to take money from them, regardless if they are church members or non-members. This cheapens the value and work of real charities and the donations that they seek, both directly and indirectly.

    4. According to the ICC's website, MERCY is the benevolent arm of the organization established to help the poor and needy. If ICC members are wearing their MERCY shirts and telling people they are collecting donations to help the poor and are actually using the money to fund their attendance to the GLC, campus/single retreats, teen summer camps, etc. they are committing FRAUD.

    5. Thanks for commenting. Not sure how they do it, but I would wager that although I am thoroughly convinced that the way money is handled in the church and it's front organizations is immoral and unethical, I'd also imagine that they are smart enough to carry it out in a way that complies with the letter of the law. That is the pattern that we can observe in many large businesses. To do otherwise would endanger the cash flow. They wouldn't do otherwise unless it was considerably easier and they were relatively sure that they wouldn't get caught, or if they did get caught, that the repercussions would not be too great. So in conclusion, who knows, maybe you are right? If so, "hope"-fully it will be thoroughly documented (forgive me the pun)
